Why Does Israeli Army Wear Funny Hats
The Israel defence force (IDF) is known for its tactical gears but one noticeably weird thing about the Israeli ground troops is the head gear they put on, it actually looks like a chef hat or if i should sound a bit more weird...a shower cap. But why does the Israeli military use this weird looking head gear?
The shower cap looking head gear is called a "mitznefet" and is normally worn over a precision cup ballistic helmet in battle. The aim of wearing this is to break the shape of the ballistic helmet making it a lot harder to spot in the distance by snipers and marks men. A ballistic helmet gives the head of a soldier a characteristic round shape which is easy to spot in the distance by gunners, wearing a Mitznefet over the helmet gives the head of a soldier a more random shape thus making it a lot harder to spot by gunners. The concept has proven to be very effective because the less outlines a sniper has to attach crossers to, the better. Also, since the Mitznefet is made with camouflage material, it easily blends into the environment giving the soldiers more stealth.
The name of the concept was gotten from the head gear (cap) called a 'Mitznefet' or 'turban' worn by the Jewish high priest in the holy temple in Jerusalem, it originates from a Hebrew language root meaning 'to wrap'. the Mitznefet is has a large netting top attached to the ballistic helmet or directly to the soldiers head via an elastic material.
It appeared in the IDF in the early 90s and was made by the soldiers themselves. It was originally home made by sewing pieces of camouflage netting together, but after the IDF saw the benefits and effectiveness of the Mitznefet in the field they decided to adopt it and make it a standard for all ground units.
The Mitznefet also acts as a 360 degree shade from the sun on sunny days or in hot desert conditions and does a better job than other military alternatives because soldiers can move the netting to whatever side the sun is facing. This shading benefits coupled together with the ease of air flow through the netting of the Mitznefet makes it very convenient during sunny days and that's why soldiers would still have them on even when their ballistic helmet is off.
The Mitznefet is another example of how the Israeli IDF uses their head to creat very simple but highly effective military gears for tactical combat purposes. plus, it just makes them look like warrior priests...super cool if you ask me.
